The Gen-Z Hit List: Get A Hobby
As your representative on the social-media front line, I regret to inform you of a new catchphrase rippling through the internet: the perils of life when “your hobby becomes your job”. It’s the latest complaint among a privileged wedge of the “internet famous”, but I’ve begun to think it might just multiply over the next decade IRL, too. We see examples of it every day: the stay-at-home mum who “baked for fun” and now finds herself the author of a pink-tinged cookbook; the yoga girl who put a downward dog on Instagram one day and has since garnered 2m followers; the 13-year-old skateboarder with a streetwear clothing line and an Insta-famous dog. We live in an age when, with the click of a button and a savvy social-media streak, anyone’s “hobby” has the potential to become a multimillion-dollar business, and I’m a little worried it’s making me a bad person.
